10 Times Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Talked About Having Kids
Newlyweds and have publicly discussed their thoughts on having children and starting a family several times — so now that they've tied the knot and can*officially*get down to baby-making business (at least, you know, without scandalizing the Queen), it's time for our collective royal-baby watch to kick into high gear! Royal expert Katie Nicholl, for example, recently toldEntertainment Tonighther sources say Harry "is very keen to start a family, pretty soon after the royal wedding." So is it too early to start a pool on what their first-born's name will be??!?
From what Princess Diana would've thought of Harry's personal life to what expensive AF item Meghan is planning on passing down to her daughter, these are the most interesting and lovely things Meghan and Harry have said about having kids.
1. "Of course I would love to have kids."
During a 2015 interview withSky News,Harrywavered on whether or not he’s totally ready for children. (Remember, this was pre-Meghan.) "Of course I would love to have kids right now, but there is a process that one has to go through," he said. He continued, "It would be great to have someone else next to me, but the time will come. Whatever happens, happens."
And in another interview in 2019, when a reporter asked him about being a dad, he said, "Me being a dad? One thing at a time. One thing at a time. I look forward to the time when it comes."
2. "There have been moments... when I think, 'I'd love to have kids now.'"
Speaking withPeoplemagazine in 2019, Prince Harry described children as an "upgrade" of their parents. "There have been moments through life, especially when we do a tour abroad, when I think,'I’d love to have kids now,'" he continued, before adding a counterpoint: "And then there are other times when I bury my head in the sand going,'All right, don’t need kids!'There’s no rush.I tell you what: There’s been times I’ve been put off having children." Eek! (But it's OK, Harry does appear to clarify those times are in the past, and that his paternal instincts are kicking in as his friends, as well as older brother Prince William, are starting families.)
3. "I'm sure she’s waiting for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again."
Harry has said that he's sure his late mother, Princess Diana, would probably want him to have kids. "I hope she's looking down, you know, with tears in her eyes, being incredibly proud of what we've established, I suppose," Harry said in a 2019 interview withABC News. "I'm sure she’s waiting for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again."
4. Before Meghan and Harry starteddating, she gaveLifestylemagazine a glimpse into how excited she is to have kids:"I also dream to have a family. It's all about balance, and I have so much happiness in my career and am fortunate to travel the world and see so many amazing things — it will also be nice to be anchored to something grounded and in the same place. Raising a family will be a wonderful part of that."
5. "I've longed for kids since I was very, very young."
In 2012, Harry toldABC Newsthat he'd always wanted , but was just waiting for the right person to settle down with. "I've longed for kids since I was very, very young, I'm waiting to find the right person," he said. "Someone who is willing to take on the job." Well it looks like he's finally found her!
And just look at the way he interacts with the popcorn-stealing daughter of the U.K. Invictus Games' team captain. So adorable! I dare you not to laugh or shed a tear.
6.Meghanis already collecting jewelry and accessories to pass down to her future children.
According toHello!magazine, in 2015 she said she bought a luxurious Cartier watch that she wants to save for her daughter:"I've always coveted the Cartier French Tank Watch. When I found outSuitshad been picked up for our third season – which, at the time, felt like such a milestone – I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version... I had it engraved on the back, 'To M.M. from M.M.' And I plan to give it to my daughter one day. That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them."
Is that the watch!?
So, it sounds like her first-born's name might start with an M. (I told you it wasn't too soon to start a pool!) First person to guess what the baby name is gets major bragging rights for the rest of their life!!! Also, it sounds like this is #sponcon, but that's OK! Meghan's a royal now; it's all part of the fairytale etc. etc.
7. "I can't wait to start a family."
In an April 2019 interview withBest Healthmagazine, Meghan named a few of her bucket list items— including expanding her lifestyle blog, The Tig, filming more romantic comedies, and traveling more. She also said, "I can't wait to start a family, but in due time." (That "due time" is now, FYI.)
8. "We'll start a family in the near future."
In their first interview together following the news of their engagement, Harry and Meghan told the BBC they don't want kids just yet, but do want to start a family. "I think eventually, one step at a time and we'll start a family in the near future," Harry said.
9. "I'm sure at some point we'll need the whole [lot]."
While on a visit to Belfast, Northern Ireland, Meghan and Harry met with a couple who make baby products and viewed part of their collection of products. Two royal correspondents said that when Meghan saw the items, she said, "I'm sure at some point we'll need the whole [lot]," suggesting they're going to have kids.
Sounds like Meghan is planning on having the coolest nursery in town!
10. But don't expect them to have a big family.
While on a trip to Dublin, Ireland in July, 2019, a curious mother of five asked Harry when he and Meghan would have kids. When he responded, he laughed and said, "Five children? — too many."
OK, how about four then?
And 11. Literally just a big smile, y'all!
ICYMI, the couple got married last weekend and, during the ceremony, kids were mentioned during Reverend David Conner's introduction. Conner said, "[Marriage] is given as the foundation of family life in which children are born and nurtured and in which each member of the family, in good times and in bad, may find strength, companionship and comfort, and grow to maturity in love," The second he mentioned stating a family, Harry couldn’t contain his joy and turned to Meghan with a big smile on his face:
