In Case of Emergency…
The FDA recently approved a new form of emergency contraception, designed to be taken after unprotected sex (like when a condom breaks) to prevent pregnancy. That means you will soon have several choices for those "uh oh" moments. Here's what you should know:
â¢Emergency contraception is just that—designed for emergencies. It shouldn't be used as a primary form of birth control, since it's not as reliable.
â¢There are currently two emergency contraception options available: Plan B One-Step and Next Choice. Both are available over-the-counter, so you don't need a prescription to get them. They contain higher levels of the same hormone (levonorgestrel) that's found in birth control pills, and you can use them up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. The main difference between these two? The hormones are identical, but Plan B One-Step is the only single dose product, so there's just one pill to take, according to Dr. Edward Linn, associate chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Feinberg School of Medicine Northwestern University.
â¢The newly FDA-approved option, called ella, can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex. Dr. Linn says that how it works isn't entirely clear: some people think that it inhibits ovulation, so it prevents a pregnancy from occurring. But the drug is chemically similar to RU486 (the so-called "abortion pill"), so it's possible that if a woman is already pregnant but doesn't know it and takes ella, it could prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. Ella will only be available by prescription.
